Critique List: Resume, Cover and Thank You Letters

To ensure that your resume, cover and thank you letters measure up to the highest standards possible, review the following list of do's and don'ts to achieve that perfect end result:

[ Layout and positioning for Critique List: Resume, Cover and Thank You Letters ]
Critique List Bullet 1 Does the overall appearance make an employer want to read it?
Critique List Bullet 2 Is the layout professional? There should be no errors or smudge marks.
Critique List Bullet 3 Keep your resume brief, 1 to 2 pages.
Critique List Bullet 4 Your name should be listed at the top of every page.
Critique List Bullet 5 Should be typed on a computer or typewriter on 8 ½" X 11" paper with 1" margins.
Critique List Bullet 6 Avoid fancy fonts, size should be 10 or 12 using conservative styles that are not mixed.
Critique List Bullet 7 Important titles should be underlined. Use bold and capital letters only when appropriate.
Critique List Bullet 8 Avoid exotic colored paper, photographs and graphics.
Critique List Bullet 9 Use black ink.
Critique List Bullet 10 One typographical error can greatly diminish your chances, two or more, can land your resume in the garbage. Do not rely on spell check! Proofread, and show your resume to several friends to have them proofread it as well. This document is a reflection of you and should be absolutely perfect.
Critique List Bullet 11 Emphasize your skills and accomplishments. Is the information organized so it is easy to read? If the employer just skims through it, would their eyes pick up the key points?
Critique List Bullet 12 Arrange the resume so it is pleasing to the eye, care should be taken to ensure there is plenty of white space between the different areas in the format of the resume and in the margins. The white spaces makes a document easy to read and serves as punctuation to separate ideas when a person is scanning the resume quickly.
Critique List Bullet 13 Consider the scannability of your resume. Be focused toward a particular job, include keywords. A good way to determine keywords is to read job descriptions for positions that interest you. If you see industry buzzwords, incorporate them into your resume.
Critique List Bullet 14 Learn how to emphasis your strong points and accomplishments, which will make you stand out from your competition.
Critique List Bullet 15 Did you account for all periods of time? The employer will look for this.
Critique List Bullet 16 Does your resume sell your problem-solving abilities?
Critique List Bullet 17 Do your strengths stand out? Is it easy to get a clear picture of your qualifications?
Critique List Bullet 18 Do statements begin with action verbs? Are verb tenses consistent? Have your resume proofread by someone who is good in grammar and spelling.
Critique List Bullet 19 Has irrelevant information been eliminated? Could your resume tell the same story if it were shortened? Can the same information be limited to one page?
Critique List Bullet 20 Is the employment objective well-written and clear? Tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for increases your success rate.
Critique List Bullet 21 Is your resume crisp, to the point, creative and visually presentable? Most of all, does it demonstrate your professionalism?

Resume Paper Stock

[ Layout and positioning for Resume Paper Stock ]
Resume Paper Stock Bullet 1 Should be 20-25 weight bond, rag or linen of good quality.
Resume Paper Stock Bullet 2 The best color for your resume is probably a slightly off-white, eggshell shade, sometimes called ecru.
Resume Paper Stock Bullet 3 The next-best color would be a classy, elegant white. Beyond these, you might consider ivory, but not one that is too yellow. You can also use a very light tan, beige or buff.
Resume Paper Stock Bullet 4 Envelope and cover letter paper should match resume paper.
